LOCAL STORIES Meet Jose Perez Jr | Business Owner, Tattoo Artist, Entrepreneur September 6, 2022

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Perez Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below. Hi Jose, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness? My habits are all mental and psychological. I’ve never let myself give up on anything, for any reason. I guess you could say I’m pretty relentless when it comes to reaching my goals. I don’t let anyone get in my head, including myself – I remove my ego and won’t take “no” for an answer. If I fall down, I get back up, keeping my head down and my focus sharp. Ideas and information persistently fill my head. So I’ve learned to be just as persistent when it comes to bringing them to life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work. So, most people know me as a Tattoo Artist. I was a key player in creating black and grey realism tattoos. At the time, my art style really set me apart from other artists. Over the years, as black and grey realism became more popular, I taught myself how to really shape my craft in order to stand out. But, there are other creative interests in my life. I’ve always been passionate about music. Currently, I’m working on a new project; Static Mind Records. A record label here, in Chicago, that focuses on giving artists an opportunity to be a part of something bigger. So far, things are going really well and I’d say this project is what I’m most excited for right now. I’m where I am, doing what I’m doing right now because I really have never given up. I put in the time. I went to the events, became a part of the community, did my research and Just. Kept. Going. Was it easy? Hell no. HELL no. Choosing to build a brand, run a business, perfect a craft… Those are things that do not allow you to stop. There is little room for error, and if you want to avoid errors, you can’t let your guard down. When I choose to do something, the gears are in motion and I’m only looking ahead. I’d like the world to know that I’m more than just a Tattoo Artist. I’m always thinking of the bigger picture, paying attention to where our world has been and where it’s going. My focus is always at 100%. The goal will always be to create something sustainable, meaningful and unforgettable. Something that, not only I’m proud of, but that everyone involved is proud of, too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to? Oh jeez, we’re doing everything! I’m originally from Chicago, so we’re going to all the best restaurants. The West Loop hooks it up with incredible cuisine. One of my favorites is Au Cheval. The best burger I’ve ever had. I love music, so we’d probably check out some live performances. I’ve never been to the Chicago Symphony, so we’d definitely get dressed up all fancy and enjoy a show. Baseball games are cool, and I love a good antique or estate sale. But I can only take so much when it comes to crowds these days, so I’d like to get away somewhere quiet, on a lake probably. Do some fishing, cook some good food, and just laugh and feel carefree. And we’d probably spend some time in the recording studio getting creative.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout? Honestly, I’m really lucky to always be surrounded by motivated, creative and inspirational individuals; teams, communities, industries, family, friends, historical figures and events, cultures, experiences… The list of people and fields that have helped me get to where I am today is endless. I’ve never believed that success is achievable by doing everything yourself. I’ve been inspired by so many artists and musicians. Over the years, I’ve had incredibly strong team members by my side – helping me build my brand, my business, my art – helping me bring all my ideas to life. I’ve worked with supportive sponsors who believe in my craft and help share my art with the world. So many friends… family members… creative partners… It really is crazy when you think about it. All these years, there have been so many experiences that happened because I chose not to go it alone. I put my ego away and it allowed all these amazing things happen. And, I’ve gotten to meet and care about a lot of amazing people.
